CDPH Releases Updated Universal Syphilis Screening Recommendations for Pregnant Individuals

On October 30, 2024, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued updated guidance for universal syphilis screening for pregnant individuals. Consistent with a recent practice advisory from ACOG, the CDPH Syndemic Infectious Disease Bureau strongly supports syphilis screening during pregnancy 1) at the first prenatal care visit, followed by 2) universal rescreening during the third trimester and 3) at birth, rather than using a risk-based approach to testing.
