The MMWR reported in its June 21, 2013 issue about a new testing algorithm evaluated in an ED and other sites to determine effectiveness of HIV detection, especially in cases of acute HIV infection. Whereas traditional testing algorithms may miss cases of acute HIV due to negative confirmatory test results, this algorithm includes testing for HIV RNA in addition to antibody screens and confirmatory tests. This algorithm was successful in identifying acute HIV infection in over 55% of those with positive antibody/negative confirmatory test results.

A commentary on this report was presented in the Annals of Emergency Medicine in January 2014 and urged Emergency Departments to consider implementation of this algorithm despite the challenges that may come along with it.
