Fourth-generation HIV rapid tests have been shown not to be effective in diagnosing HIV in infants with a p24 antigen specificity of <2%. Although sample sizes were small, researchers do not feel they can recommend the use of the 4th generation rapid tests for diagnosis of infection in infants, even late in the disease. These tests perform at similar levels as 3rd generation rapid tests.
